Predator

I make myself
go slowly to the sink.

S o o o s l o w l y,

the blue-tailed skink,
sharp toothed and full

of hereditary stink,
sunbathing in our kitchen,

doesn’t realize
I’m a toe’s length

from the thread
of its claw, its

hypervigilance.

Millennia of evolution,
undone by a woman

wielding an empty
cookie jar.
