My homeland speaks in tongues

My homeland speaks
in tongues. Gone too far
to roll back vein and gristle.
Retract its words. Redact.
Cross it all out with a thick-
tipped sharpie. Twice,
so the print won’t show through.

I’ve decided to think of it
as talking too fast. Thought
becoming afterthought. Speeches
cataracts in a country
aging badly. Eye for eye,
making the whole world blind.
